Welcome

Welcome to the new LabNotes, now an electronic newsletter for MBL Corporation Members, Associates, and Alumni. You can expect to find LabNotes in your in-box every other month, or whenever breaking news from the MBL warrants a special issue.

LabNotes is a way to keep in touch with the MBL when you’re away from Woods Hole. If you miss an issue, you can always visit our website to catch up on the latest news. And speaking of news, please let us know about special honors or professional occasions. We want to share updates from friends and colleagues regularly in our “Announcements & Accolades” section.

LabNotes isn’t the only way you’ll be hearing from the MBL in the coming months. This fall the MBL will unveil a new four-color feature magazine, which will be published twice a year. This magazine will highlight the MBL’s remarkable and outstanding research and educational programs. It will be beautifully designed, very visual, and written in an engaging way for an educated lay audience. Although our primary audience for this publication is donors and the general public, we think our friends in the scientific community will value it as well.

Your thoughts and comments about the new LabNotes and the MBL’s communications efforts in general are always welcome. Please send them along to Pamela Clapp Hinkle, Director of Communications and Public Affairs, at pclapp@mbl.edu.

lillie Facilities Update

Whitman Renovation Moves Forward
With $4 million in pledges and gifts in hand, the $11 million renovation of the Whitman building is moving forward. The entire Whitman building, including the auditorium, will be gutted and refitted. Construction will begin immediately after Labor Day, although some preliminary work on the outside of the building will be done this summer. Whitman investigators must vacate the building no later than September 5th. Anyone staying beyond this date must make arrangements to move to another laboratory on campus. Renovations will be complete by late spring, just in time for the summer 2007 research season. Investigators expecting to arrive in early spring must also make arrangements to use alternative laboratory space.

MBL to Re-side Loeb, Environmental Science Lab
The exterior of the Loeb building will soon be re-sided with shingles, replacing the existing vertical siding. All horizontal header and sill pieces will be clad in a gray metal. This work should start around mid-April, stop during the summer months, and resume in the fall. The project is scheduled for completion in November.

The Environmental Science Laboratory will also be shingled, new windows will be installed, and some wall A/C units will be added for cooling. This project will start mid April and end by mid-June.

Lillie Renovation Planned/Book Collection Moves
The section of the third floor of the Lillie Building that houses the MBLWHOI Library’s book collection is being converted back to research space, its pre-1981 use. Newer books in the collection are shelved and available in the Bay Reading Room. Older books have been moved to the Library Service Center at Falmouth Technology Park. These volumes are available within one business day upon request... More >>

gift shop Associates News

April brought three events sponsored by the MBL Associates:

  • The Gift Shop reopened for the season on Monday, April 3rd.

  • The final Falmouth Forum of 2005-2006 was held on Friday, April 7th. The talk, titled “Corruption in Governments: What Can and Should We Do?” drew over 100 people to hear the provocative presentation by Trinity College political science professor Clyde McKee.

  • And on the lighter side, the Associates offered a new event for families during April school vacation, Science Facts & Fictions: Family Movies at the MBL. Families were very pleased, and it looks like more of these “family movies” are likely to be offered in the future.
