Message from the Director
Spring 2008 at the MBL is off to a spectacular start. Weve just completed a brisk conference season, welcoming top-notch international gatherings such as the Sea Urchin and Immunoparasitology meetings back to Woods Hole. While conferences have now given way to the first of this years courses, there are a record 26 conferences scheduled for the fall season to date and we look forward to continuing to host many of worlds scientific leaders at these meetings come September... Fellowships Awarded
MBL Summer Research Fellows
Twenty three scientists have received fellowships to conduct research at the MBL this summer.
Grass Fellows
Nine scientists have been awarded fellowships by the Grass Foundation to conduct research in neurobiology at the MBL this summer. The program is directed by Catherine Carr, University of Maryland. Gal Haspel of NIH/NINDS and Daphne Soares of the University of Maryland serve as associate directors.
Science Journalism Fellows
Sixteen science reporters, producers, and editors have been awarded Science Journalism Fellowships at the Marine Biological Laboratory and Toolik Lake, Alaska this summer.
Albert and Ellen Grass Faculty Awards
Four investigators have been awarded Grass Faculty Awards at the MBL this summer. The goal of this program is to take advantage of the collaborative environment of the MBL and bring together neuroscientists at the Assistant or Associate Professor level from different institutions to work together to conduct specific research in neuroscience.
Dart Scholars Program in Learning and Memory
Five scientists have been named Dart Scholars in Learning and Memory this summer. Sponsored by a generous grant from Dart Neuroscience, these awards bring top scientists in the field of learning and memory together to conduct research at the MBL for the summer. |

First Grass-MBL Sabbatical Fellow Arrives at the MBL
- The Science of Seeing in Color - Color-vision researcher Iñigo Novales Flamarique, Ph.D., of Simon Fraser University (SFU), British Columbia, Canada, is the first recipient of the Grass-MBL Sabbatical Fellowship in neuroscience.

Associates News
Keep an eye on the mail this month for your invitation to the Associates Annual Meeting and Reception. The MBLA board of directors has decided to try something new this year. The event will be held on Saturday, June 28th rather than on a Sunday morning. It will begin with the Annual Meeting at 5 PM in the Speck Auditorium in the Rowe Building to be followed by a reception in the Meigs Room at Swope just down the street. MBL Photomicrography Contest Now Open
The 2008 MBL Photomicrography Contest began May 15. The purpose of the contest is to feature extraordinary microscope images of life science subjects that the MBL can use to promote its mission and activities.
The contest is open to all registered MBL community members (i.e., those who hold a current MBL ID) who are at least 18 years old as of the date of entry. All entry forms and submissions must be received at the MBL by 5PM, September 15, 2008. Each person or group entering can submit up to three images. Winners will be notified in mid-October, and publicly announced in the MBL Catalyst magazine and on our website in November.

MRC Summer Interns
As part of its outreach and education role, the Marine Resources Center (MRC) supports an internship program with positions available to college students and recent graduates. This is a one-semester program that can take place during the spring, summer, or fall. The college-level program has recently expanded to accommodate recent college graduates looking for a one-semester, six- month, or one-year program prior to graduate school. Interns will gain valuable hands-on experience in aquatic animal care, husbandry and culture as well as working in a research lab...More>>>

Announcements & Accolades
- The American Academy of Arts and Sciences, one of the nations most prestigious honorary societies, has announced its 2008 Class of Fellows, including John E. Hobbie, Distinguished Scientist and Senior Research Scholar at Marine Biological Laboratorys (MBL) Ecosystems Center. Also among this years fellows are four MBL alumni and ten MBL course faculty, including Timothy J. Mitchison of Harvard Medical School, co-director of the MBLs Physiology course; and Michael Dickinson of California Institute of Technology, present instructor and former co-director of the MBLs Neural Systems & Behavior course.
- Gary Ruvkun, of Harvard Medical School and co-director of the MBL's Biology of Molecular Aging course, received a 2008 Gairdner International Award which recognizes the worlds leading medical research scientists. Since 1957, 70 of 288 Gairdner winners have gone on to win the Nobel Prize.
- The American Society for Limnology and Oceanography (ASLO), the leading professional organization for researchers and educators in the field of aquatic science, awarded Ecosystems Center distinguished scientist John Hobbie a lifetime achievement award. ASLO also awarded Senior Scientist Bruce Peterson with the John Martin Award, which recognizes a paper in aquatic sciences that is judged to have had a high impact on subsequent research in the field. Bruce and co-winner Richard Eppley were recognized for their seminal 1979 Nature paper, Particulate organic matter flux and planktonic new production in the deep ocean.
- MBL visiting scientist James Galloway, (University of Virginia) was the recipient of the 2008 Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement. Galloway works each summer with Ecosystems Center scientists, and this year will be taking his sabbatical here from September to December.
- Distinguished Scientist Shinya Inoué published The Collected Works of Shinya Inoué: Microscopes, Living Cells, Dynamic Molecules (World Scientific Publishing).
- Corporation member and former MBL director John Burris will become president of the Burroughs Wellcome Fund effective July 1, 2008. Burris is currently president of Beloit College in Wisconsin.
- MBL scientist Julie Huber presented at the "Science Exchange Breakfast" and panel discussion at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). The event, held February 16, provided a forum for 120 high school science students to meet and learn more about the career pursuits and science paths traveled by young researchers at the postdoctoral level.
- Early this year Lionel Jaffe was invited to give a talk to the Royal Society on calcium waves. A paper which stemmed from that talk, entitled "Calcium waves", has appeared in April 12 issue of the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society.
- Former MBL Corporation member and Physiology course director Joel Rosenbaum (Yale University) will receive an honorary degree from the University of Siena in Italy this month for his work in cell and molecular biology.
- Correction: Paul Colinvaux's title was incorrect in the last issue of LabNotes. He is a Senior Research Scientist at the Ecosystems Center. His recently released book, Amazon Exhibitions: My Quest for the Ice-Age Equator, continues to receive media attention, including an interview on NPR's Living on Earth with Steve Curwood.

George Putnam, III, President of New Generation Advisers, Inc., was elected to the MBL Board of Trustees in their February 2nd meeting. Putnam graduated from Harvard College in 1973, and in 1978 graduated from the joint JD-MBA (law and business) program at Harvard. More>>>
