Just Two Months Remain for Tax-Free Charitable Gift Opportunity
For Woody and Hanna Hastings, the Pension Protection Act of 2006 was the opportunity they had been waiting for that allowed them to give generously to the MBL.
"This was an opportunity that Hanna and I could not pass up," said Hastings. "It’s almost like matching funds on Public Radio with the IRS doing the matching."
The window of opportunity to create a meaningful gift using pre-tax dollars from pension funds is closing. From now until December 31, 2007, the Pension Protection Act of 2006 allows you to a make a significant contribution to support the MBL’s research and educational programs. The transfer must be made directly from a conventional IRA to the MBL and cannot exceed $100,000 per person. Pre-tax funds can be readily transferred from other retirement accounts to an IRA for this purpose.
Hastings remains an advocate for using the Pension Protection Act for charitable giving. "For the MBL, such gifts can help jump-start the upcoming fund drive during its silent phase and can show foundations, corporations and large individual donors that Corporation members are solidly behind important programs"
