Whitman Campaign and Renovation Update

This fall, preliminary work on the MBL’s Whitman Laboratory renovation and expansion will begin. The work, a redistribution and upgrade of Whitman’s electrical systems, is a crucial first step toward the full-scale expansion and renovation, which, pending a successful fundraising campaign, will begin in the spring of 2005. Site plans and floor plans for this exciting project can be viewed online here.

The Whitman expansion and renovation will enable the MBL to accommodate state-of-the-art biology by visiting scientists from around the world, and is one of MBL director William T. Speck’s top priorities.

In addition to giving the green light for the electrical work to begin, the board of trustees recently named Howard Jacobson and Bill Huyett co-chairs of the development committee and this summer launched a $20-million campaign to raise funds for this project. To date, the MBL has raised $1.9 million toward its goal.

To continue the fundraising momentum, the board is seeking leadership gifts and has created numerous naming opportunities ranging from $25 thousand to $10 million.

If you or someone you know would like to make a leadership gift or name one of Whitman’s labs after a respected mentor or in memory of a loved one—or if you would like a copy of our campaign statement—please contact Carol Pooser, Director of External Affairs, Marine Biological Laboratory, 7 MBL Street, Woods Hole, MA 02543, 508-289-7650, cpooser@mbl.edu.
