MBL Supports BioBlitz - The MBL participated in the June 2010 "Falmouth BioBlitz" organized by the 300 Committee. The event brought together experts, local naturalists, and the general public to identify and catalogue as many species on a 130-acre site as possible in 24 hours.

FoleyAssociates News

The 2010-2011 MBL Falmouth Forum season begins on November 19th with a presentation at 7:30 PM in Lillie Auditorium by Brendan Foley of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. He'll be talking about archaelology and technology in the deep sea. The full schedule is currently being set. Please check the Falmouth Forum webpage for updates.





The Biological Bulletin

The October issue features as the editor’s pick an article by H. J. Morowitz et al., "Ligand field theory and the origin of life as an emergent feature of the periodic table of elements." The authors propose that transition metal catalysts could have jump-started metabolism and life itself, deep in hydrothermal ocean vents. Click here for the press release.



Announcements & Accolades

Shinya Inoué, MBL Distinguished Scientist, was honored by the Government of Japan with the Order of the Sacred Treasure, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon award.

Gary Borisy was awarded the University of Chicago Distinguished Service Award for Medical & Biological Sciences alumni for “outstanding leadership in, and making significant contributions to, the biological sciences.”

Peter Smith was awarded the Massachusetts General Hospital Martin Research Prize for excellence in basic research for a collaborative research effort in the study of the acidification of the male reproductive system.

Microbial Diversity course faculty Thomas Schmidt received the 2010 American Society for Microbiology Graduate Microbiology Teaching Award for dedication to students and for fostering an intellectually stimulating environment.

MBL Trustee Gerald Fink was awarded the 2010 Genetics Prize of The Peter and Patricia Gruber Foundation for his groundbreaking research in yeast genetics.

MBL Scientist Julie Huber Receives Neal Cornell Career Development Award

MBL Scientist Mitchell Sogin was awarded the Dr. Gordon Moore Environmental Grant from Ion Torrent of Guilford, Conn., and San Francisco.

Joseph W. Sanger, longtime MBL corporation member and former trustee received the 2010 Henry Gray/Lippencot Williams & Wilkins Scientific Achievement Award.
