MBL Annual Fund: Trustees and Others Make Extra Effort in 2008

Thanks to MBL trustees, scientists, alumni, and members of the community, the MBL Annual Fund in 2008 surpassed $950,000, a record for the institution. More importantly this money was used to meet the basic, day-to-day needs of students and researchers who increasingly depend on sophisticated infrastructure, equipment, and expertise to fully pursue their work.

“That MBL supporters continued -- and even increased -- their support despite the economic downturn was truly heartening and made a world of difference in our ability to maintain a quality research environment in 2008.” said Development Committee co-chairman, Jeffery Pierce.

“It would take an extra $20 million in unrestricted endowment to generate the funds that the MBL now receives through annual giving. As nice as that would be, there is a lot to be said for the breadth of support represented by the Annual Fund. For one thing, it provides a measure of stability in times like these when endowments take a hit. And if MBL continues to merit widespread support from both scientific and non-scientific constituents, that sends a positive signal to others. I am deeply grateful to all our donors for making 2008 a great year and will be working toward a $1 million Annual Fund in 2009.”
