MBL Trustees Elect New Members
The Trustees of the Marine Biological Laboratory elected several new Board members at their November 6, 2004, meeting. Dr. Mark C. Fishman of Cambridge, Massachusetts; Mr. Kenneth E. Johns, Jr., of Dallas, Texas; Dr. Douglas A. Melton of Cambridge, Massachusetts; and Mr. Charles M. Rosenthal of New York, New York, were each elected to the Class of 2008. They began their terms in January 2005.

Mark C. Fishman is president of the Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research; President and CEO of the Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research, Inc.; and a member of the Executive Committee of Novartis AG. He leads all worldwide discovery research activities of Novartis in the U.S., Europe, and Japan. Prior to accepting his current post, Dr. Fishman was professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, and chief of Cardiology and director of the Cardiovascular Research Center at the Massachusetts General Hospital. As a scientist, Dr. Fishman, contemporaneously with Dr. Nusslein-Volhard, introduced the zebrafish as a genetic model system for vertebrate development. He is also the author of the best-selling medical textbook, Medicine. A graduate of Yale College and Harvard Medical School, Dr. Fishman completed his Internal Medicine Residency, Chief Residency, and Cardiology training at the Massachusetts General Hospital. He serves on several editorial boards, has worked with numerous national policy and scientific committees, and is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Kenneth E. Johns, Jr. is an attorney practicing in Dallas, Texas. In addition to representing the interests of Kenneth B. Dart, he is acting CEO of Dart Neuroscience LP, which funds fellowships at the MBL for scientists engaged in research on the neurobiology of learning and memory. Six Dart Scholars have worked at the MBL since 2003. Mr. Johns received a B.S. from the University of Memphis in 1967 and a J.D. in 1970. Following graduation from Law School, he served in the USAF Judge Advocate Generals Corp. After his military service, Mr. Johns joined Vinson & Elkins, a Texas-based multinational law partnership where his practice was devoted to litigation from 1974 until 1999 when he resigned to form his own firm. He was board certified in Civil Trial Law by the Texas Board of Specialization from 1987 to 2000, is an associate of the American Board of Trial Advocates, and an arbitrator for the National Association of Securities Dealers, the New York Stock Exchange, and the Commodity Futures Association. Mr. Johns is a member of the American Bar Association and the Texas Bar Association. He has been a director of the Liposome Company, and is a director of Helicon Therapeutics, Inc., in addition to several private companies.
Douglas A. Melton is the Thomas Dudley Cabot Professor of the Natural Sciences at Harvard University and is a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator. He also co-directs Harvards Stem Cell Institute and the Bauer Center for Genomic Research. Dr. Meltons laboratory is focused on the goal of making pancreatic tissue in culture for transplantation into people with diabetes. This challenging project involves understanding the embryonic formation of the pancreas and the role of stem cells in pancreatic development. Dr. Melton earned a B.S. in biology from the University of Illinois and then went to Cambridge University in England as a Marshall Scholar. He earned a B.A. in history and philosophy of science at Cambridge and remained there to earn a Ph.D. in molecular biology at Trinity College and the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Medicine, and the author of over 100 publications.
Charles M. Rosenthal is a senior managing director of First Manhattan Company in New York, investment advisors and securities brokers/dealers. He has worked there since 1974. Mr. Rosenthal is a graduate of Colgate University. He was appointed to the Brown University Corporations Board of Trustees in 1992, and serves on Browns Advisory and Executive Committee, Campus Life Committee, Investment Committee, Campaign Steering Committee, and is chair of the Universitys Audit Committee. In 1999 he was reelected as a term Trustee and will serve through June 2005. He is the father of two Brown graduates.
