Gifts & Grants

The Grass Foundation awarded a grant of $450,000 for the Neuroscience Institute’s Albert and Ellen Grass Faculty Grant Program for 2006-2008. A grant of $45,000 was awarded to support the course Neural Development and Genetics of Zebrafish for 2006-2008. They also awarded a grant of $50,000 to support the purchase of basic equipment to be used in the Grass Laboratory during the summer program.

Burroughs Wellcome Fund awarded a grant of $207,000 for the continued support of the Molecular Mycology: Current Approaches to Fungal Pathogenesis course from 2006 through 2008. They also awarded a grant of $240,000 to support a new interdisciplinary Physiology course directed by Ron Vale and Tim Mitchison. In addition, $4,500 was granted to support the MBL Trager Lectures in tribute to renowned parasitologist and MBL summer scientist, Dr. William Trager, and $800 was given to support a seminar in the Global Infectious Diseases Program.

The Clowes Fund, Inc. awarded a $200,000 challenge grant for the endowment of The John E. Hobbie Fund for Science in The Ecosystems Center.

William Randolph Hearst Foundation awarded a grant of $200,000 to increase support for the William Randolph Hearst Endowment for Instructional Programs.

The Arthur Vining Davis Foundations awarded a grant of $150,000 to support the endowment for the Semester in Environmental Science program.

Pfizer Foundation awarded a grant of $42,094 to support Living in the Microbial World, a teacher enhancement workshop.

The International Brain Research Organization through the joint Society for Neuroscience and National Academy of Sciences IAC-USNC/IBRO committee provided a grant of $24,742 to support the participation of foreign nationals in the MBL neurobiology courses.

The Eppley Foundation for Research, Inc. awarded a grant of $23,543 to support Dr. David Mark Welch’s project entitled “Exploration of the Innate Immune Response of Anciently Asexual Animals: A Potentially Novel System for Combating Pathogens.”
Cabot Family Charitable Trust awarded a grant of $20,000 for the Science Journalism Program endowment.

The Charles River Lab awarded $72,000 for “New LAL-related Product Development.” The principal investigator is Norman Wainwright.

The Department of Defense awarded the following grants:
  • $136,462 (subawarding institution: Battelle Columbus Operations) for “Biological Approaches to Sensing Visual Scenes.” The principal investigator is Roger Hanlon.
  • $120,904 (subawarding institution: Clemson University) for “Soft Robot Manipulators and Manipulation.” The principal investigator is Roger Hanlon.

The Department of Energy awarded the following grants:
