MBL Alumni Celebrate Anniversaries by Supporting 2005 Classes

In May, alumni of the summer courses of 1980, 1985, 1990, 1995, and 2000 launched an effort to support this year’s students as a way to celebrate their MBL anniversaries. Representatives sent classmates their old class photos and pointed out that back then, as now, the MBL has never turned away a students based on financial status, one of the reasons why gifts from alumni are so important.

The MBL is often a hugely influential experience for young scientists. As one biologist, marking his 25th anniversary said,

“I recall working harder that summer than I probably had previously or have since; I was very tired at the end. And yet it was exhilarating to be immersed in science for those eight or so weeks. Daily lectures were presented by authorities of the highest caliber. Weekly seminars were typically by members of the National Academy or Nobel laureates. The quality of instruction and the commitment of the instructors were unparalleled. One of our instructors that summer was Tim Hunt. I recall sitting around a table with him and a few other members of the class, hearing about this odd protein whose abundance was altered cyclically during the cell cycle of surf clam (Spisula), one of those odd organisms that MBL denizens come to appreciate, love, or both. The work he was describing, and inviting us to participate in, was the basis for Professor Hunt’s recent Nobel prize.”

It is this type experience, repeated over the years, that makes the MBL courses world famous. Although the Class of 2005 has now departed, the MBL is likely to remain an important guidepost in their scientific careers.

Members of the anniversary classes have until the end of the fiscal year on December 31st to make gifts in support the 2005 classes.

The Anniversary Appeal for the Alumni Fund is a new component of the two-pronged MBL Annual Giving Program. The Alumni Fund supports current students while the Annual Fund covers other costs not met by grants and fees, provides bridge funding when critical research must continue between grants, and seeds key strategic activities and new programs.

Annual Fund or Alumni Fund gifts may be made through cash, Visa, Mastercard, Discover or gifts of stock. See www.mbl.edu for online giving or contact Kate Shaw, 7 MBL Street, Woods Hole, MA 02543; (508) 289-7416; kshaw@mbl.edu.
