Recent Gifts and Grants

The Dart Neuroscience Limited Partnership gave a grant in the amount of $1,000,000 in support of the Dart fellows summer research program in learning and memory for the years 2004 through 2008.

Allen Whitehill Clowes Charitable Foundation, Inc. gave a grant in the amount of $819,702 to cover the renovation of the real estate bequeathed to the MBL by Allen Clowes.

The Gruss Lipper Family Foundation renewed funding in the amount of $226,953 for the Gruss Lipper Research and Educational Fund for Israeli Scientists over a period of three years.

The Keith R. Porter Endowment for Cell Biology awarded $100,000 to endow the Keith Porter Lecture Fund for lectures to be given in conjunction with the MBL Friday Evening Lecture series.

The Massachusetts Environmental Trust gave a grant in the amount of $61,340 for the Ecosystems project “Building the Scientific Basis for Coastal Plain Pond Conservation.”

The Waksman Foundation for Microbiology gave a grant in the amount of $27,000. $9,000 will support the Science Journalism Program and $18,000 will support the Microbial Diversity Course.

The National Cancer Institute renewed funding in the amount of $25,000 in support of the Science Journalism Program being offered in 2004.

The Kohlberg Foundation, Inc. gave a grant in the amount of $25,000 to support a conference dealing with coastal rare species issues. The conference will be titled “Scientific and Practitioner Network for Sandplain Conservation.”

Japan Science and Technology Agency awarded $125,384 for “Joint Research Agreement.” Rudolf Oldenbourg is the principal investigator.

NOAA awarded $23,715 for “Career 2004: Integrated Training in Coastal Science and Management.” Linda Deegan is the principal investigator.


National Institutes of Health awarded the following grants:
  • $2,434,014 (over five years; $490,850 first year) for “Development of New Automated Polarized Light Microscope.” Rudolf Oldenbourg is the principal investigator.
  • $193,635 for the course, “Embryology.” Joel Rothman is the principal investigator.
  • $133,797 for “Training in Methods in Computational Neuroscience” Lenny Dawidowicz is the principal investigator.


The National Science Foundation awarded the following grants:

  • $4,920,000 (over six years; $820,000 first year) for “Plum Island Ecosystems LTER.” John Hobbie, Bruce Peterson, Charles Hopkinson, Linda Deegan, and Anne Giblin are the lead investigators.
  • $349,749 for “Biogeochemical Tracers in Arctic Rivers: Linking the Pan-Arctic Watershed to the Arctic Ocean.” Bruce Peterson and Robert Holmes are the lead investigators.
  • $59,950 for “The Arctic LTER Project: The Future Characteristics of Arctic Communities, Ecosystems, and Landscapes.” John Hobbie, Gus Shaver, and Bruce Peterson are the lead investigators.
  • $50,000 for “Support of a Charter Vessel for the Collection of Live Marine Organisms for Neurobiological Research.” Roger Hanlon is the principal investigator.


NASA awarded the following grants:

  • $94,747 for “The NASA Planetary Biology Internship Program.” Lynn Margulis and Michael Dolan are the lead investigators.
  • $76,799 (Subawarding Institution: Lockheed Martin Corporation) for “Meeting Support and Management Systems and Services.” Diana Jennings is the principal investigator.
  • $65,920 for “Workshop on Molecular Evolution.” Michael Cummings is the principal investigator.
