MBL Renovates Nobska Road Estate
Property to serve as home for future MBL Directors

Thanks to a major gift from the Allen Whitehead Clowes Charitable Foundation Inc., the MBL completed the renovations of the Whitehill Estate on Nobska Road in Woods Hole. The property, which was bequeathed to the Laboratory by philanthropist Allen Whitehill Clowes in 2000, will serve the MBL as a home for future Directors and selected visitors. Whitehill is currently being rented to MBL’s newly appointed Chief Academic and Scientific Officer William Beers and his family.

The bequest from Mr. Clowes follows a long tradition of philanthropy from the Clowes family to the MBL. The Clowes family foundation, The Clowes Fund, has played a key role at pivotal times in the history of the institution. The family’s generous gifts throughout the years in support of MBL’s Ecosystems Center, Marine Resources Center, and the MBLWHOI Library have provided vital support for the Laboratory’s research and educational programs. Clowes family patriarch, Dr. George H. A. Clowes, Sr. was a founding scientist of the MBL and a Corporation Member and Trustee until his death in 1958.

Mr. Allen Whitehill Clowes, son of Dr. Clowes, summered in Woods Hole throughout his life. His elegant Cape-style house, named Whitehill, was built in 1945. In an effort to address signs of wear and improve the functionality of the building, the MBL selected a contractor to renovate the property’s exterior and interior. Renovations included window, roof, and wood shingle replacement, as well as landscaping improvements. The house also underwent kitchen and bathroom updates and interior renovations that improved the functionality of the property beyond its former configuration.

The most important design challenge was creating an environment suited to entertaining groups of people, while simultaneously catering to the personal needs of a Director’s family.

“Mr. Clowes’s personal gift of his property conveys his interest in and lasting commitment to the Woods Hole community,” said MBL Director, Willliam T. Speck. “The MBL will honor Mr. Clowes’s memory by keeping his name alive and his property in beautiful condition for years to come.”
