Gifts and Grants

Burroughs Wellcome Fund provided a grant in the amount of $424,101 to support the “Frontiers in Reproduction Course: Molecular and Cellular Approaches” for three years, beginning in May 2004.

The G. Unger Vetlesen Foundation renewed its grant of $350,000 in support of the Josephine Bay Paul Center for Comparative Molecular Biology and Evolution; for the program to develop marine models for biomedical research in the MRC and to support veterinary services at the MBL.

The Starr Foundation provided a grant in the amount of $250,000 for laboratory equipment and a computer classroom for students in the Semester in Environmental Science that takes place in the C. V. Starr Environmental Sciences Building.

World Precision Instruments provided equipment with a value of $38,685 to the MBL’s Neural Systems and Behavior course.

The Harold Whitworth Pierce Charitable Trust provided a grant in the amount of $25,000 to support the Semester in Environmental Science.

DARPA (DOD) awarded $135,936 (subawarding institution: Clemson University) for “Soft Robot Manipulators and Manipulation.” Roger Hanlon is the principal investigator.

Department of Energy awarded $147,275 (over three years; subawarding institution: Harvard University) for “Global Warming and Carbon Storage in Mid-Latitude Forest Ecosystems – NIGEC.” Jerry Melillo and Paul Steudler are the lead investigators.

National Marine Fisheries Service awarded $105,807 for “Library Collection, Facility and Services at Northeast Fisheries Service Center, Woods Hole.” Cathy Norton is the principal investigator.

NOAA awarded $36,807 (subawarding institution: Columbia University) for “From Site to GCM Grid Box: Building Interactive Hierarchies of Data and Models to Assess Carbon Cycle and Climate Feedbacks Due to Agriculture and Forestry Practices in the Conterminous U.S. and China.” Jerry Melillo is the principal investigator.

U.S. Air Force awarded $200,000 (over two years) for “Cephalopod Coloration and Sensory Mechanisms.” Roger Hanlon is the principal investigator.

USDA awarded $280,000 (over two years) for “Isolation and Characterization of Differentially Regulated Genes in Activated Rainbow Trout Macrophages.” Frederick Goetz is the principal investigator.

USGS awarded $60,540 (over two years) for “USGS/MBL Cooperative Agreement.” Cathy Norton is the principal investigator.

NASA awarded the following grants:

  • $299,910 for “Biogeochemical Consequences of Agricultural Intensification in the Amazon Basin.” Jerry Melillo, Paul Steudler, and Christopher Neill are the lead investigators.
  • $240,620 (over two years) for “Key Connections in Amazonian Stream Corridors.” Linda Deegan and Christopher Neill are the lead investigators.
  • $88,225 (over four years) for Amplified Detection of Microbial Contamination for Planetary Protection.” Norman Wainwright is the principal investigator.
  • $49,999 (over three years; subawarding institution: University of Alaska Fairbanks) for “The Role of Land-Cover Change in High Latitude Ecosystems: Implications for Carbon Budgets in Northern America.” Jerry Melillo and David Kicklighter are the lead investigators.

National Insitutes of Health awarded the following grants:

  • $2,684,918 (over five years; $507,196 first year) for “Molecular Evolution of Eukaryotes: A Protistan Emphasis.” Mitchell Sogin, Hilary Morrison, and Andrew McArthur are the lead investigators.
  • $348,750 for “Mitochondrial mRNA Editing in Trypanosomes.” Stephen Hajduk is the principal investigator.
  • $155,000 (over two years) for “PCBs Target p53 Family Expression in Embryos.” Carol Reinisch is the principal investigator.
  • $77,500 (over two years) for “Origin of Virulence Factors in African Trypanosomes.” Andrew McArthur and Stephen Hajduk are the lead investigators.
  • $64,446 (subawarding institution: BioCurrents Research Inc.) for “Ultra-Micro Oxygen Sensor Development.” Peter Smith is the principal investigator.
