Honors

The number of Nobel Laureates associated with the MBL over the years grew to 46 with the announcement that Sydney Brenner of the Molecular Sciences Institute in Berkeley, CA, and H. Robert Horvitz of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology had won the 2002 Prize (with John E. Sulston) for "discoveries concerning genetic regulation of organ development and programmed cell death." Dr. Brenner was an instructor in the MBL's Physiology course from 1967 to 1970. Dr. Horvitz taught in the Embryology (1982, 1984), Neurobiology (1982), and Physiology (1985, 1986) courses. For a complete list of Nobel Laureates associated with the MBL, visit our website.

Annual Giving Surpasses Goal

More than $550,000 raised in 2002

A record number of scientists, alumni, MBL Associates, and friends raised $553,620 for the Annual and Alumni Funds in 2002, surpassing the goal of $525,000. “I want to thank everyone who made the decision to support the MBL this year. Your gifts are tremendously important,” said Annual/Alumni Fund Chairman, Peter Armstrong.

MBL annual giving programs are crucial in providing funds to meet expenses not covered by grants, fees, and other income. The funds are used during the year in which they are received to further MBL research and education goals. A strong annual giving program also sends a positive message to federal and private grant makers about the Laboratory’s support among individuals.

“We are growing,” remarked Armstrong, “and as we pursue strategic objectives, we will depend on a robust Annual/Alumni Fund to ensure the healthy underpinnings of research and education programs.”

Annual Fund or Alumni Fund gifts may be made through cash, Visa, Mastercard, Discover, or gifts of stock. See www.mbl.edu for online giving or contact Kate Shaw, 7 MBL Street, Woods Hole, MA 02543; (508) 289-7416; kshaw@mbl.edu.

The following gift clubs are available for membership:
The Century Club ($100-$249)

Promotions

Two resident MBL investigators were recently promoted by vote of the Board of Trustees.

Edward Rastetter, a member of the scientific staff of The Ecosystems Center since 1986, has been promoted to Senior Scientist. Ed received his Ph.D. from the University of Virginia in 1986 and his B.A. from the University of Hawaii in 1976. His research interests include building mathematical models to understand the cycling of nutrients such as nitrogen and carbon through ecosystems. He is a member of the faculty of the MBL's Semester in Environmental Science Program for undergraduates.

Andrew McArthur has been promoted to Assistant Scientist. A member of the Bay Paul Center scientific staff since 1998, Andrew uses laboratory and computational approaches in his research to understand biological diversity and function. Andrew received his Ph.D. from the University of Victoria in 1996 and his H.B.Sc. from the University of Western Ontario in 1991.
