MBL Establishes The Neuroscience Institute
Building on the historic significance of neuroscience at the Marine Biological Laboratory, the MBL in consultation with The Grass Foundation, has launched a new initiative known as The Neuroscience Institute to foster the presence, prominence, and growth of neuroscience at the Laboratory. While the Institute continues to evolve in form and function, current activities focus on initiating new programs in neuroscience at the MBL and on facilitating interactions and collaborations among members of the neuroscience community both at and outside the MBL.
The Neuroscience Institute at the MBL is a work in progress, says William T. Speck, Director and CEO of the MBL. We envision that it will be the glue that binds together the many neuroscience educational and research activities at the MBL, sparking synergy and fostering collaboration.
During the summer of 2003 Speck named David Bodznick, Ph.D., Coordinator of the Institute. Bodznick is Professor, Department of Biology, Professor of Neuroscience and Behavior, and Director of Graduate Studies at Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT. As Institute Coordinator, Dr. Bodznick serves as liaison between the Institute and the MBL, manages Institute programs, coordinates special topic seminars that bring summer investigators in the neurosciences together with faculty and students participating in the seven neurobiology courses currently offered at the MBL, and organizes informational meetings and social gatherings designed to foster dialogue among neuroscientists working at the MBL.
Thanks to a far-sighted grant from The Grass Foundation, a cornerstone of the new Neuroscience Institute initiative is the establishment of the Albert and Ellen Grass Faculty Grants Program. This grant program provides support for teams of neurobiologists collaborating on a research project during the summer months at the MBL. The intent is to attract mid-level investigators to the MBL to complete the spectrum of neurobiologists already participating here, which extends from graduate students in the courses to world-class principal investigators. Information about these and other fellowship opportunities can be found on the MBLs web site here.
