Gifts and Grants

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation awarded a grant of $500,000 to the MBL/WHOI Library to support the Universal and Biological Indexer and Organizer project. This new taxonomic system provides an innovative means of accessing, sorting, and collating information contained in databases distributed throughout the internet.

The Grass Foundation renewed funding for the Neural Systems and Behavior Course in the amount of $120,000 and for the Neurobiology Course in the amount of $105,000. These grants provide support for these courses from 2002 through 2004.

The Catherine Filene Shouse Foundation awarded an additional grant of $51,000 to provide support for female investigators and students at the Lab this summer in the following amounts: $20,000 for an expendable fellowship; $18,000 for three course scholarships; and $13,000 for
a student participating in the SES program.

The Irving Weinstein Foundation, Inc. awarded a grant of $25,000 to support a new course titled “Advances in Genome Technology and Bioinformatics.”

The Environmental Protection Agency awarded $102,723 in support of “Coastal Wetland Indicators.” Charles Hopkinson is the principal investigator.

Pfizer Foundation provided a grant of $25,000 in support of the Living in the Microbial World Teacher Enhancement Workshop and several mini-workshops and teacher meetings.

Department of Energy (DOE) awarded $30,000 for “Investigations into the Metabolic Diversity of Microorganisms as Part of Microbial Diversity.” Caroline Harwood is the principal investigator.

US Department of Agriculture (USDA) awarded $179,678 for “Characterization of myostatin expression in fish.” Frederick Goetz is the principal investigator.

Intel Corporation donated a computer system (worth $41,434) to the Laboratory of Michael Cummings.

Pharmacia Upjohn
awarded $102,000 for “Sponsored Research Agreement.” Orian Shirihai is the principal investigator.

U.S.G.S.
(with Cornell University) awarded $64,809 for “A Watershed-Scale Biogeochemical Loading Model for Nitrogen and Phosphorus.” Robert Howarth is the principal investigator.

The Pfizer Foundation renewed a grant in the amount of $27,500 in support of the Living in the Microbial World and Life and Living in Space Teacher Workshops in 2002.

The Ellison Medical Foundation awarded a grant in the amount of $282,670 in support of three Colloquia from 2002 through 2004. (The Colloquium on Global Infectious Diseases was held at the MBL June 20th through 22nd.)

IMPULSE awarded $128,189 in support of “Electrophysiology and endocrine response of electrically stimulated beta-cells and islets – IMPULSE DYNAMICS Research Agreement.” Peter Smith is the principal investigator.


NASA awarded the following grants:
  • $1,228,113 in support of “Environmental Genomes and the Evolution of Complex Systems in Simple Organisms & Ecological Genomes.” Mitchell Sogin is the principal investigator.

  • $350,124 in support of “Center for Advanced Studies in Space Life Sciences at the Marine Biological Laboratory.” Diana Jennings is the principal investigator.

  • ; $200,000 in support of “Amplified Detection of Microbial Contamination for Planetary Protection.” Norman Wainwright is the principal investigator.

  • $180,250 for “Predicting changes in regional and global biogeochemical cycles.” Jerry Melillo is the principal investigator.

  • $116,069 in support of the project titled, “A Modeling Synthesis of the Impacts of Tropical Forest Conversion on Carbo Fluxes and Storage, and on Nutrient Dynamics in Amazonia.” Edward Rastetter is the principal investigator.

  • $97,511 for “Modeling the Biogeochemical System of the Terrestrial Amazon: Issues for Sustainability.” Jerry Melillo is the principal investigator.

  • $64,814 in support of “Gene Function and Horizontal Transfer.” Monica Riley is the principal investigator.

National Institutes of Health (NIH) awarded the following grants:
  • $235,229 for “Characterization of the Giardia lamblia transcriptome.” Andrew McArthur is the principal investigator.

  • $200,553 (first of five-year award totalling $1,073,654) for “Logistical and technical support for NINDS at the Marine Biological Laboratory.” Thomas Reese is the principal investigator.

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Admimistration (NOAA) awarded the following grants:
  • $208,971 (first of five years) for “Frontiers in Reproduction Training Course and Symposium.” Asgerally Fazleabas is the principal investigator.

  • $175,000 for the project titled “Predicting changes in regional and global biogeochemical cycles.” Jerry Melillo is the principal investigator.

  • $151,720 in support of “Training in Professional Development for Neuroscience.” Joe Martinez is the principal investigator.

  • $151,472 in support of “Course on Fundamental Aspects of Vision Research.” David Papermaster is the principal investigator.

  • $89,413 in support of “Neural Mechanisms of Vestibular Function.” Roger Hanlon is the principal investigator.

  • $56,249 in support of “Bacterial Assemblages Involved in the Development and Progression of Shell Disease in the American Lobster, Homarus Americanus.” Roxanna Smolowitz is the principal investigator.
