Perfect Weather Complements Best-Attended Whitman Society Reception

On an exquisite July evening, more than 150 members of the Whitman Society were honored with a sumptuous reception on the grounds of the National Academy’s Jonsson Center on Quissett Harbor. The Whitman Society recognizes those who contribute $1,000 or more each year to the Marine Biological Laboratory’s Annual and Alumni Funds.

Those present were reminded by Dr. William T. Speck, Director and CEO of the MBL, that Whitman Society members are responsible for the bulk of MBL’s unrestricted funding and that therefore they are critical to the financial health of the Laboratory.

Long-time MBL investigator and current Annual/Alumni Fund Chairman, Peter Armstrong, noted that The Whitman Society was founded in 1992 with 123 members and has since grown to 244 members, adding that nearly three quarters of those in the Society have been members for three or more years.

At any given time the Annual and Alumni Funds provide essential resources for MBL investigators and students such as building renovations, computer expertise, and financial aid. Importantly, both funds give the Director the flexibility to take advantage of unanticipated research and teaching opportunities.

At press time the Annual/Alumni Funds stood at $240,000 with just four months remaining to reach the $525,000 goal for 2002.

Annual gifts may be made through cash, Visa, Mastercard, Discover, or gifts of stock. For information contact Kate Shaw, 7 MBL Street, Woods Hole, MA 02543; (508) 289-7416; kshaw@mbl.edu. Gift Club levels, including the Whitman Society, are listed below.
