MBL Annual Fund Reaches Record

The 2001 Annual and Alumni Funds, the MBL’s primary sources of unrestricted dollars, reached a record total of $520,820 in 2001 against a goal of $500,000. The Trustees Challenge, which offered to match gifts from new and returning donors, as well as those who increased their giving, spurred a large rise in giving, with 868 individuals making gifts this year versus 661 last year. This additional support was instrumental in helping the MBL meet and surpass its goal in the face of a difficult period following September 11th. Thanks are due to the Trustees who funded the challenge grant: Chris Weld, JeJe Pierce, Jack Rowe, George Logan, Bob Prendergast, Shelly Segal, Claire Fraser, Torsten Wiesel, and Joan Ruderman.

The Trustees Challenge also boosted membership in the Whitman Society, which honors those contributing $1,000 or more to the Annual Fund. With a record 35 new members and an 88% renewal rate, the Society’s membership now stands at 245. Also notable was the addition of 67 new alumni donors. Alumni now count for a full 25% of Annual Fund supporters.

Many thanks to Annual Fund Chairman, Peter Armstrong and to Margaret Clowes who served as the MBL Associates Chair of the Annual Fund.

The Development Committee of the Board of Trustees has set the goal for the 2002 Annual and Alumni Funds at $525,000.
