MBL on the Road

The MBL is actually larger than its Woods Hole campus would imply. Its influence, both geographically and in terms of impact on the life sciences, reaches around the world. There are thousands of people at every important research institution, who take something of the MBL with them from their experience here in Woods Hole, whether as a student, faculty member, fellow, or summer investigator.

There are clusters of MBL scientists, for example, in Boston, New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, New Haven and Raleigh/Durham. With the MBL in a strong position and strategic planning underway, Director William T. Speck decided it was important to take his message on the road. On February 24 some 65 scientists from Duke University, the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, North Carolina State University, Wake Forest University, and Research Triangle Park, attended a reception on the Duke campus to listen to Dr. Speck address the issues facing the MBL, and talk with him about the current strategic planning initiative. In the questions that followed and the general conversation, it was clear that both recent students and veteran MBL investigators are excited about having a stake in the MBL of the 21st century.

Dr. Speck noted, “…although we are a small institution, we have historically had a disproportionate impact on the life sciences…As I go out and meet people around the country who consider the MBL to have been critical to their careers, I am more convinced than ever that we must grow the institution in a way that it can continue to play a significant role in biology and in the world.”
