In Memoriam — C. Ladd Prosser
May 12, 1907 – February 3, 2002
C. Ladd Prosser died peacefully at 95 years of age on Sunday February 3, 2002 in Urbana, Illinois. Born in Avon, New York, he lived in Urbana, and in Woods Hole, Massachusetts. He was Professor of Physiology and Chairman of the Department at the University of Illinois for many years. Until 1997, he spent almost every summer of his adult life working at the Marine Biological Laboratory. He served as a Trustee of the Laboratory in 1950 and again from 1952 to 1975. He was a Life Member of the MBL Corporation.
Dr. Prosser received his A.B. from the University of Rochester in 1929, and his Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University in 1932. He did postdoctoral work at Harvard Medical School and at Cambridge in Oxford, England. Among the many awards and honors bestowed upon him, Dr. Prosser was appointed a member of the National Academy of Sciences in 1974.
He met his wife Hazel Blanchard in 1934 while teaching the summer course in physiology at the MBL, where Hazel was working in the Library. They were married in 1934. She died in 1999. Dr. Prosser leaves three children, Jane Ellen Prosser Armstrong of Woods Hole, Nancy Ladd Prosser Meinertzhagen of Halifax, Canada and Loring Blanchard Prosser of Indianapolis, six grandchildren, and one great grand-child.
An informal memorial gathering will be held during the summer of 2002 at the Prosser Cottage on Gardiner Road, Woods Hole.
