Trustees Will Match Gifts From New Donors, Others in 2001 Annual Giving Program

With the MBL Annual Fund just a bit more than halfway to its goal of $500,000 in unrestricted gifts, Trustee and Development Committee Chairman, Chris Weld announces a Trustees Challenge designed to encourage new and returning donors as well as to raise sites among existing donors.

“The Annual Fund is the lifeblood of the MBL,” said Mr. Weld. “It reaches into every important area and enables a host of finely tuned systems to work together to create a thriving scientific enterprise. My fellow trustees and I feel so strongly about the importance of the MBL Annual Fund and the need for it to grow, that we are ready to pledge at least $50,000 in the form of matching gifts.”

The MBL Annual Fund is an essential source of unrestricted income available for answering immediate needs as well as for providing the flexibility to take advantage of opportunities or meet new challenges.

New Annual Fund Chairman, Dr. Peter Armstrong, who is a member of the MBL Science Council and a long-time summer investigator, encourages all MBL scientists and friends to take advantage of this “great opportunity to double your money for the MBL”. Dr. Armstrong, along with MBL Associates Annual Fund Chair, Peggy Clowes, is seeking to exceed the $500,000 goal and add at least 100 new donors to the roles.

Any donor to the MBL Annual Fund or Alumni Fund who meets one of the following criteria will have their gift matched by the Trustees Challenge Fund.

New Donor in 2001:
Have not given to the Annual Fund before.

Alumni Fund Now Key Component of Annual Giving

In 2000, the MBL Annual Giving Program expanded to include not only the traditional Annual Fund for general purposes, but an Alumni Fund to which alumni can contribute to help meet current education needs.

Annual Fund Chairman, Peter Armstrong notes that MBL alumni are increasing their support to the Laboratory. “In addition to the benefit of doubling your money this year with the Trustees Challenge, increased participation, especially from alumni, has extra value since foundation donors are positively impressed by evidence of the strong commitment from the MBL community.”
