Great EsCapes

Happy Trails

The tourists are gone, the air is crisp and clear, and it’s the perfect time to enjoy some of the Cape’s many great locations for leisurely walking and other fun before winter sets in. Here are a few favorites.

1. The Beech Forest Trail
Race Point Road, .05 miles north of Route 6,
Provincetown

The Beech Forest Trail is a sandy, mile-long path that circles the shallow Beech Forest Pond before heading through a forest of beech trees and sand dunes. It’s a lovely trail in and of itself, but nature lovers get an added bonus. Bring birdseed to offer up to the chickadees and in no time at all you’ll have them literally eating out of your hand.

2. Bourne Farm
West Falmouth Highway (Rte. 28A)
Falmouth
(508) 548-8484

Bourne Farm is nice any time of year but it is especially beautiful on a sunny fall day. This 49-acre farm with many trails, a 1775 farmhouse, and a pastoral pond is owned and operated by Salt Pond Area Bird Sanctuary, Inc. The trails are accessible year-round in exchange for a donation at the trailhead.

3. Cape Cod Rail Trail

Fall weather is ideal for biking, so bundle up, strap your bike to the car, and head to the Cape Cod Rail Trail, a 22-mile bike path from Dennis to Wellfleet. Access and free parking for trail users are available at:
  • The trailhead at Route 134 in South Dennis
  • Headwaters Drive in Harwich
  • Route 137 in Brewster
  • Nickerson State Park in Brewster
  • Orleans Center
  • Cape Cod National Seashore at the Salt Pond Visitors Center in Eastham, one-half mile from the Locust Road intersection with the trail
  • National Seashore at Marconi Area
  • The trailhead at LeCount Hollow Road in South Wellfleet
