Great EsCapes: Giving Back

Today, more than ever, our communities and neighbors need our help. Cape Cod and the Islands are home to a number of non-profits, charities, and community organizations from which to choose when deciding where to contribute your precious time and skills.

If you are interested in giving back to your community but not sure how or where, check out this short list of organizations currently looking for volunteers.

American Red Cross,
Cape Cod & Islands Chapter
286 South Street
Hyannis, MA 02601

<www.capecodandislandsredcross.org>

Red Cross volunteers receive free training in various fields of expertise including participating in local community activities, responding to a local disaster (house fire, airplane crash, oil spill), or deploying to different parts of the nation where a disaster has struck (Katrina, California wildfires, Iowa floods, Western Massachusetts ice storms).

If you are good at sports, cooking, dancing, singing, arts, crafts, computers, homework help, knitting, crochet, or have other talents or expertise you would like to share with kids, the Boys and Girls Club can use your help. They are always looking for enthusiastic, patient, and caring adults to work with and help local children. (Please note a criminal records background check is required for all volunteers.)

The Samaritans

All that is required of a volunteer for The Samaritans on Cape Cod and the Islands is compassion, understanding, and a willingness to listen. A volunteer can make a difference by helping to prevent a caller from reaching their breaking point. Callers need someone to validate their feelings—to be there to listen to their concerns and fears. Samaritan volunteers report developing a new appreciation for their own lives and gratitude for the connections they make with callers.

Volunteers in Public Schools (VIPS)
113 Lakeview Avenue
Falmouth, MA 02540
Tel: 508-548-1621
Email: vips@falmouth.k12.ma.us
<www.falmouthvips.org>

The need for volunteers in our public schools is great and the possibilities are almost endless. For most positions, there is no experience necessary and no special skills required. Simply a willingness to help will qualify you for many jobs, ranging from one-time to weekly commitments. However, opportunities do exist for volunteers with special skills, interests, and backgrounds. Some opportunities require training which VIPS will provide.
