roofFacilities Update

Though the streets around us have been quiet this winter, MBL facilities projects have been buzzing.
  • The big news continues to be the Loeb Laboratory renovation. The project will start in earnest after Labor Day 2009 but some preliminary work is taking place this spring. You may notice workers on the rooftop mechanical room, making interior structural repairs in areas damaged by extended exposure to saltwater, installing new flood protective walls, and rerouting underground telephone lines.

  • Three Devils Lane cottages are being renovated and are expected to be completed by the time our 2009 summer visitors arrive.

  • According to the MBL’s Climate Commitment Committee, the biggest contributor to the MBL’s 2008 carbon footprint was electric power, weighing in at some 3,000 tons. The committee will be comparing numbers over the years to measure the environmental impact of energy conservation efforts the MBL undertakes. The most profound impact, however, can come from individual conservation efforts. So, please, continue to turn your lights and computers off when you are not using them!

Note: The new Water Street drawbridge is scheduled to be complete and open to traffic in late May.
