INTRODUCTION

A. Buffered Salines

Formulations described as buffered saline (BS) are typically relatively simple media containing sodium chloride at a concentration approximately isosmotic for the species, maintained at a physiological pH. A sampling of BS recipes involving three different buffers - phosphate, TRIS, and HEPES - is presented in Table 8, and they are referred to by the abbreviations PBS, TBS, and HBS, respectively. Potassium chloride is also frequently included, and sometimes additional ingredients such as glucose. A few recipes, like that of Dulbecco (PBS-1, Table 8A), are commonly called "PBS" even though they approach Ringer's solutions in complexity.

B. Solutions Isosmotic with Seawater

Single-ingredient solutions that are approximately isosmotic with seawater of Salinity 35 o/oo (ISOs), which is close to average ocean Salinity (see Section II), can also be useful experimentally. A number of these are presented in Table 9.
