N1 (MBL): According to [A1], this formula was calculated from the Table of Major Constituents of Sea Water [B1] by J.D. Ostrow, and tested at the MBL in 1951 by E.B. Harvey.
N2 (TRIS-MBL): = ASW #1 (MBL ASW) buffered with TRIS [B2].
N3 (CaF-MBL): Formula made isotonic to MBL ASW with NaCl .
N4 (MgF-MBL): Formula made isotonic to MBL ASW with NaCl and Na2SO4.
N5 (CaMgF-MBL): Formula made isotonic to MBL ASW with NaCl, KCl, and Na2SO4.
N6 (Trace-MBL): According to [A1], this formula was calculated from the Table of Major Constituents of Sea Water [B1] by J.D. Ostrow.
N7 (ClF-I-MBL): Chlorides replaced by iodides
N8 (ClF-N-MBL): Chlorides replaced by nitrates
N9 (CaF-M): A calcium-free recipe reported in [A1]; used, for example, with gametes of Pectinaria [B13] Original source not yet determined.
N10 (CaF-S): Original source not yet determined; [A1].
N11 (CaF-E): A calcium-free EGTA-containing formula used with sea anemones [B11].
N12 (NaF): Sodium-free, used with oocytes of the mussel, Mytilus edulis; additional variations are given [B10].
N13 (TES-NaF): A TES-buffered sodium-free formula used in studies of brachiopod larval metamorphosis; many other ASW ionic variations also given [B12].
N14 (TES): A TES-buffered formula used in studies of brachiopod larval metamorphosis; many other ASW ionic variations also given [B12].
N15 (MOPS): A MOPS-buffered formula used to wash marine "worm" (Glycera) erythrocytes [B9]; formula slightly modified from the original appearing in [B9-x].
N16 (BZ): For additional information, see [B3] .
N17 (AP): Original source not yet determined; [A1],[A2].
N18 (HB): For additional information, see [B5].
N19 (HR): For additional information, see [B5].
N20 (VHa): For additional information, see [B6], [B7].
N21 (VHb): For additional information, see [B6], [B8].
N22 (CH): A formulation containing a very high calcium concentration. Original source in the "Challenger Reports" not yet located; [A1].
