From the Boston University Marine Program (BUMP)…

Joanna York, a Ph.D. student in Ivan Valiela’s laboratory, has been named a STAR Fellow by the U. S. EPA. The highly selective fellowships are provided to students working on important environmental issues that fall under the purview of EPA goals and support graduate work by providing funds for a stipend, tuition, and research support. York’s project proposal defined relative uptake of nitrate or ammonium by phytoplankton in shallow estuaries common to Cape Cod. The results of York’s work will help define the relative role of nitrate inputs from land and ammonium regenerated within the estuary, and in establishing the degree of estuarine eutrophication. Her results will also quantify the magnitude of phytoplankton uptake relative to that of other nitrogen transformations in the estuaries of Cape Cod and elsewhere.

In fact, you can claim your $150 Fitness Benefit once you’ve belonged to a health club and been a BCBSMA member for at least four (4) months (in a calendar year).

Exactly What Kind of Health Club Membership Qualifies? Start exercising your options by picking a qualified, full-service health club that works for you. The facility you choose must have a vast array of cardiovascular and strength-training exercise equipment, such as traditional health clubs, Ys, and JCCs. Fees paid for attending aerobics/fitness classes at a qualified health club without an annual membership will also be covered, but make sure you get full documentation from the club.

It’s Not Just About Sex

Each year the Human Resources Office mails to all employees a copy of the MBL Policy on Sexual Harassment. New employees receive prevention training from the EEO Coordinator. By doing so, MBL strives to meet its commitment to provide an environment free from harassment on the basis of sex. Did you know that this policy also states that unlawful harassment is “not limited to” just sex? Are you familiar with the other types of harassment that are not permissible?

Under the civil rights laws, sexual harassment is just one type of unlawful discrimination. Other types include harassment based on race, color, religion, gender, national origin, age, or disability. This means that any behavior such as racial or ethnic slurs or any verbal or physical conduct that denigrates an individual’s personal characteristics, beliefs, or background is not allowed.

Summer will be here shortly and our population will expand, so let’s be prepared to conduct ourselves in a manner that is both legal and appropriate to ensure a positive working and learning environment for everyone.
