From the BioCurrents Research Center
At the ATP-Binding Cassette (ABC) Proteins: From Multidrug Resistance to Genetic Disease Conference in Gosau, Austria, March 1 - 8, Orian Shirihai and Solomon Graf presented a poster titled: A complex mitochondrial signal sequence targets ABCB10 (ABE-me) to the mitochondrial innermembrane where the protein assembles into homodimers and homotrimers.. The poster can be seen outside Lillie 219.
At the Biophysical Societys 47th Annual Meeting in San Antonio, Texas, March 1-5, Peter Smith and Kasia Hammar, along with BRC summer visitors Sarah Garber and Paul Malchow, presented:
The latter two posters can be seen on the 2nd floor
of Lillie.
At the Society for Experimental Biologys Annual Meeting in the Southampton, UK, March 31-April 4, BRC summer visitor Leah Devlin will present:
Devlin C. L., W. Amole, and K. Shea. 2003. Calcium stores used during muscarinic receptor activation in a holothurian smooth muscle.
From the Boston University Marine Program
Sofia Fox and Sarah Good, both BUMP graduate students, were awarded NOAA National Estuarine Research Reserves Fellowships in the 2003 national competition. These fellowships provide stipends and research support for dissertation work.
Sofia is interested in understanding why seaweed blooms occur in our coastal waters. She will conduct an experimental assessment of the relative role of nutrient and grazing controls of macroalgal blooms in Cape Cod and other sites around the world.
Sarah is interested in the link between changes in land use and eutrophication of shallow estuaries, and will be documenting the increases in nitrogen loads to Waquoit Bay on Cape Cod that may be the result of increased urban development during the last decade.
