Winterizing the MBL Club at 100 Water Street

Thanks to a generous gift from former MBL Trustee Jean Pierce, the MBL is renovating the MBL Club portion of 100 Water Street, which is also home to the Pierce Visitors Center and the Associates Gift Shop.

MBL Facilities and Special Projects Director Rich Cutler expects the work to be completed by mid-April, just in time for an Associates event on the 23rd and the start of the Medical Informatics Course in May. The MBL Club, which provides family programming for MBL scientists, staff, and members of the community during the summer months, will open in mid-June.

MBL Club Winterizing the Club will enable the MBL to provide additional and much-needed meeting room space for conferences, courses, and research seminars throughout the year. The space is also an ideal venue for small social gatherings and special events.

Plans for winterizing the facility include insulating the floor, walls, and ceiling and installing a modern heating system that will allow heat to be distributed more evenly throughout the room. The cathedral ceiling will remain, but insulation will be installed between the rafters. The beams will be modified to make them more attractive and functional. Power outlets will be hidden in these beams to provide more flexibility for classroom activities and special events. The outside louvers on the dormers are being replaced with operable windows to let fresh air in. Combined with new ceiling fans, the space will remain comfortable while maintaining the seaside “club” atmosphere. The existing kitchen/office area will be enhanced with countertops, cupboards, a small refrigerator, and a built-in desk. The thermal windows installed a few years ago will remain, as will the gable-end fixed windows. Architect Noah Greenberg has designed a new room-darkening system for the gable-end windows to replace the cumbersome and unattractive canvas and rope system that has existed for years. Finally, the balcony that extends from the second floor Satellite Club area has been removed and the double doors leading to the balcony have been replaced with double-hung windows.

Anyone wishing to book the MBL Club room for an event or seminar between the months of September and May should contact Pam Oldham in the Housing and Conferences Office at x7214. The Club is generally not available for such functions during the summer months.
