Message from the EEO Coordinator

New Opportunity to Self Identify

In 2008, MBL employees will be given the opportunity to self identify to comply with the new ethnic/race categories that have been instituted this past year by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). They have given people of all races, who consider themselves to be Hispanic or Latino, an opportunity to identify their ethnicity, and they have increased the number of racial categories from five to seven by splitting the Asian/Pacific Islander classification into two, Asian and Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander, and adding a new category of “Two or More Races.” Since data from the 2000 census indicated that more than 6.8 million Americans (almost half of whom were under the age of 18) identify themselves as being of two or more races, the EEOC decided it was necessary to offer this as an option when self identifying.

As in the past, providing this information will be strictly voluntary. It will be kept separate from your personnel records and will be used only for EEOC reporting purposes and for MBL analyses of its Affirmative Action Plan and commitment to diversity.

If you have any questions or concerns about the new categories or self identifying, please contact Jane MacNeil, x7378, eeo@mbl.edu
