Promotions, Appointments & Awards

Sam Kelsey, was promoted from Research Assistant II to Research Assistant III in The Ecosystems Center

Chief Financial Officer Homer Lane was appointed Vice President for Member Communications for The Association of Independent Research Institutes (AIRI), at their Annual Meeting on September 26, 2007. AIRI is a nationwide association of 89 independent, not-for-profit research institutes and exists to promote communication among member institutes’ management staff about common interests and to pursue issues at the federal government level that are in the interest of member institutions and their scientists. Homer will be responsible for developing strategies to effectively communicate information of value to all AIRI members.

MBLWHOI Library Director Cathy Norton has been appointed to the Board of Directors of BioOne, an aggregation of high-impact bioscience research journals. Most of BioOne’s titles are published by small societies and non-commercial publishers and have been available only in printed form. BioOne provides an on-line integrated, cost-effective access to a thoroughly linked information resource of interrelated journals focused on the biological, ecological, and environmental sciences.

Neil Sarkar, MBLWHOI Library Informatics Manager, has been named as chair of the Data Analysis Working Group (DAWG). The DAWG is one of five working groups that are part of the Consortium for the Barcode of Life. The DAWG is responsible, in particular, for the exploration and development of new methods to analyze DNA barcode data.

Milestones

Jeffrey R. Beaudoin, Network Systems Administrator, and his wife Jen welcomed twin girls, Ashlyn and Kylee, on December 29, 2007.

Assistant Scientist Julie Huber and her husband Matt Heintz welcomed a baby boy, Alexander Huber Heintz, on September 3, 2007.

Chief Financial Officer Homer Lane and his wife Mary welcomed their first grandchild, Sophia Liore Law, on September 21, 2007, in Baltimore, Maryland. Parents are Homer and Mary’s daughter Molly and Danny Law (2005 MBL summer employee).

Chris Dematos, Web Systems Manager/Webmaster and Jennifer Wagner were married on July 7, 2007, at Granite Links in Quincy, MA.
