Activities Committee Spearheads MBL Charity, Holiday Events
The MBL Activities Committee has had a very active couple of months. In November, Nancy Stafford organized a Thanksgiving food drive for MBL contributions to the Falmouth Service Center. The drive resulted in several boxes of donations from the MBL and Woods Hole communities.
In December, the committee sponsored the MBLs third annual Holiday Bazaar. Co-chaired by Suzanne Livingstone and Brendan McCann, the event drew 24 vendorsincluding MBLers Valerie Butcher, Tamara Clark, Vicki Gibson, Melanie Hayn, Suzanne Livingstone, and Sandra McCannand was attended by employees from the MBL and other Woods Hole institutions, as well as members of the Woods Hole community. Sodexho provided tables, coffee, and cookies as well as two turkeys for the raffle, which were won by the MBLs Herb Luther and Woods Hole community member, Win Smith. Ideas are already being proposed for next years bazaar. If you have any suggestions or thoughts, Brendan or Suzanne would love to hear from you.
Also in December, the Activities Committee, led by Deb Deering, Kelly Holzworth, and Beth Liles sponsored several Giving Trees that provided employees with a way to donate presents to local children who would otherwise go without gifts during the holidays. Unwrapped presents such as electronic items, arts and crafts supplies, sporting goods, puzzles, games, and gift cards were collected. 120 gifts were taken to the Housing Assistance Corporation from trees at the Ecosystems Center, Homestead, Bay Paul Center, and Marine Resources. An additional 85 gifts collected from the Swope lobby tree were delivered to the Falmouth Service Center. Both the Housing Assistance Corporation and the Falmouth Service Center profusely expressed their thanks to the MBL community for the overwhelming response to the needs of the families served.
The MBLs annual holiday event, held on December 19, capped off the seasons festivities. Becky Mountford chaired the event, with the assistance of Valerie Butcher, Deb Deering, Lisa Hunt, Beth Liles, Suzanne Livingstone, Cindy MacDonald, Marian Padenski, Nancy Stafford, Ann Woolford, the MBL Apparatus Department, and Sodexho. Brendan McCann and his son Andrew set up the train and winter village scene for the center of the much-admired banquet table. The event drew a large crowd and the raffle prizes, including the summer on-campus parking passes, ferry tickets to Nantucket and Marthas Vineyard, and Café Swope lunches, were extremely well received.
A warm thanks goes out to all who gave of their time and efforts to make the season sparkling and fulfilling for the MBL community.
