Seth Bordenstein received an award from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Precollege Science Education Initiative for $725,225 from 2007-2012. The project is entitled The Wolbachia Project: Discover the Microbes Within! and will allow high school teachers and students to explore symbionts in their local insect fauna using biotechnology and DNA sequence analyses. With the HHMI funding, the MBL will expand this cutting-edge program originally initiated with an intensive, three-day teacher workshop by Bordenstein in 2005 to become a national training center for Discover the Microbes Within! workshops. Three school systems, including Falmouth High School, currently use the curriculum.

Roger Hanlon delivered the plenary address to the International Ethology Conference in Halifax, Canada, on August 18, 2007. Attending were 400 scientists from every continent except Antarctica. Hanlon was interviewed by CTV, Canadas largest private broadcaster and parts of his talk and video presentation were featured on Breakfast Television, the most popular morning show in the Canadian Maritimes.
