Bay Paul Center:
A Training Ground for Future Scientists
While the number of graduate students at the MBL is growing, the Josephine Bay Paul Center is continuing its long tradition of helping Research Assistants build the independent research skills needed for graduate school. Last month, four Bay Paul Research Assistants left the Center to enter doctoral programs: Sarah Biber (Mark Welch lab) has joined the Molecular and Cellular Biology Program at Brandeis University;
Jennifer Rocca (Sogin and Mark Welch labs) has joined the Botany Program at the University of Texas at Austin; Hilary Smith (Mark Welch lab) has joined the Program in Aquatic Chemical Ecology at Georgia Tech; and Susanna Theroux (Sogin-Amaral Zettler lab) has joined the Brown-MBL Graduate Program. We are saddened to see them leave the Center, says Bay Paul Center Assistant Scientist David Mark Welch, but are confident that they will be excellent graduate students and wish them continued success in their careers.
MBL Softball Team Wraps Up Season
The MBL Softball Team capped off another great season with their best effort yet as they defeated their rival, WHOI Carpenters, in their final game by the score of
13-6. The MBL finished up the season with an 8-5 record overall. Softball is a great way for MBL employees and students to meet people from different departments that they may never interact with otherwise, says Environmental Health and Safety Manager and team coach Jim Marcello. Everyone had a great time this season and we ended it all with a cook-out that everyone attended. Jim would like to thank MBL summer stockroom assistant Dave Galatzer-Levy for acting as a backup coach at games he couldnt attend.
