Great EsCapes: Bike Trails of Cape Cod
Biking is one of the best ways to experience the beauty of Cape Cod. The Cape has hundreds of miles of biking trails, which weave through woodlands, sand dunes, and seashore. So, take a break from Cape traffic this season, hop on your bike, and experience the Cape “off the beaten path.”
The Cape Cod Rail Trail
Dennis to Wellfleet
508-896-3491
This trail follows a former railroad for 22 miles through the towns of Dennis, Harwich, Brewster, Orleans, Eastham, and Wellfleet. Its paved surface, few hills, and well-marked automobile crossings make it ideal for cyclists. There are many opportunities to get off the trail and visit a beach. Food, water, and public restrooms are also readily available along the trail.
Cape Cod Canal Bikeway
Bourne to Sagamore, along the Cape Cod Canal
508-833-9678
This bikeway follows the Cape Cod Canal through sections of the towns of Bourne and Sagamore and offers fantastic views of the canal’s boat traffic. It runs on both sides of the canal for approximately 7 miles between the Bourne and Sagamore Bridges. This trail is ideal for beginner cyclists, especially families with younger children.
Province Lands Bike Trail
Provincetown
508-487-1256
This hilly, moderately difficult 5 1/4 mile loop can be accessed from the National Park Service’s Province Lands Visitor Center. If you ride the trail spurs to Herring Cove Beach, Race Point Beach, and Bennet Pond you can add another two miles to your ride. This trail winds among beech and oak forests, sand dunes, and freshwater ponds and is a great way to see the vast dune system in the Province Lands.
