Message from the Equal Employment Opportunity Coordinator
by Jane MacNeill
MBL EEO Coordinator
Foreign Affairs
While most of my articles focus on EEO matters as they pertain to national laws, this one has more of an “international” flavor based on my experiences over the past year as MBL’s Foreign National Coordinator.
First, I want to be sure that everyone is aware that, as of January 7, 2007, all persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by air are required to present a valid passport.
The Department of Homeland Security has also set the date of January 1, 2008, as the time by which all persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or sea will be required to have a valid passport.
This may be news to some of you who rarely travel and have never had a passport, but it will not be of any surprise to MBL employees who are here from foreign countries and regularly carry their passports with them. While their number is small, they are an active, enthusiastic group who form our foreign national community and meet several times a year to socialize and share their ideas about what it’s like to live in America.
With the help of Matt Person, Serials Librarian in the MBLWHOI Library, who serves as MBL’s liaison on WHOI’s International Committee, foreign national events in the upcoming year will focus on how Woods Hole can be made a more welcoming community to our foreign guests. They are very important members of our community, enriching our community both scientifically and culturally; I ask that you make every effort to help them feel as “at home” here as you would like to feel if you were working in a foreign country for the first time.
