Holiday Giving Trees Spread Joy to Those in Need
The MBL Activities Committee sponsored two “Giving Trees” for the holiday season, collecting presents from the MBL community for the Cape Cod Housing Assistance Corporation and the Falmouth Service Center to give to Falmouth-area children.
Homestead and Starr building employees selected tags from their tree that gave the name, age, and gift wishes for homeless children sponsored by the Housing Assistance Corporation. Initially, there were 30 tags on the tree at Starr, but within half a day, those 30 children had already been sponsored. Kelly Holzworth, who coordinated the Housing Assistance effort, added 12 more names, which were quickly taken by staff. Each child was given two gifts: an item of clothing and a toy.
Other MBL employees bought gifts for a Giving Tree in Swope lobby, to be distributed by the Falmouth Service Center. Unwrapped presents such as electronic items, sporting goods, toys, and gift cards were collected for needy Falmouth children. The gifts, which filled an MBL van, were collected at the MBL’s holiday party on December 14th and delivered to the Service Center the next day.
According to Beth Liles, chair of the MBL Activities Charity Awareness Committee, “The Giving Trees provided an easy and fun way for employees to reach out to their neighbors in need. The response was terrificMBLers really stepped up. We (the Charity Awareness Committee) will definitely want to do something like this again next year. Thank you to everyone who participated or helped in any way.”
The members of the Charity Awareness Committee are: Phyllis Doheny, Suzanne Donovan, Andrea Early, Kelly Holzworth, Beth Liles, Debbie Scanlon, and Nancy Stafford.
