Fall 2006, Vol. 2, No. 2 | Index

Great EsCapes

Fall is here! Many of us who live on or near Cape Cod treasure October’s slower pace (and relatively traffic-free roads!). What better time to enjoy an afternoon of pumpkin or apple picking, hayrides, and crisp fresh air?

Falmouth

Tony Andrews Farm
394 Old Meeting House Road, East Falmouth
(508) 548-4717

Pumpkin picking is a time-honored tradition at Tony Andrews Farm. The farm is well-known for “pick your own” fruits and vegetables, but come autumn, it’s all about pumpkins. Find your perfect pumpkin Monday through Saturday from 10:00 AM until 5:00 PM. A Halloween Kid’s Fest will be held on October 14, 15, 21, 22, 28, and 29 from 11:00 AM until 3:00 PM. Hayrides are $2.00 per person.

Coonamessett Farm
277 Hatchville Rd., East Falmouth
(508) 563-2560
www.coonamessettfarm.com

Coonamessett Farm is a membership farm, with membership required for picking your own fruits and vegetables, however non-members are welcome to pick their own pumpkins as well as visit the farm general store and café, which carries fresh produce, gourmet items, and vegetarian foods. The farm and store are open 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Wednesday through Sunday. The farm will hold a Halloween party for kids on Sunday, October 29 from 10:00 am until 3:00 pm. Events include Halloween crafts, face painting, magic shows, storytelling, and a blueberry maze.

Out of Town

Flax Pond Cranberry Company
1 Robbins Path, Carver
Phone: (508) 866-2162
www.flaxpondfarms.com

This family owned and operated farm has been in business for 35 years and specializes in cranberries (including jams, jellies, and cranberry condiments) as well as Christmas trees. A visit to the farm during harvest-time will include a talk on cranberry growing, the opportunity to see “dry harvesting” and a variety of farm equipment. Visitors can “screen” cranberries on an antique Bailey Separator and see many cranberry artifacts in the farm.

Peters Family Orchards and Cider Mill
537 Main Street, Acushnet
(508) 995-6533
Open 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM

If you visit Peters Family Orchard, bring your appetite with you! Spend a day picking your own apples (the orchard offers eight varieties including Macommon, McIntosh, Cortland, Red and Golden Delicious, and Empire). You can also purchase apples at the farm stand where you’ll also find pumpkins, freshly baked pies, cider, jams, jellies, candied apples, and more. Hayrides available on the weekends.
