Activities Committee Update
The MBL Activities Committee sponsored a very successful Employee Picnic on September 7th. The weather was perfect, the food was great, and the cooks were pros!
The next event will be the MBL Holiday Bazaar, Thursday, November 16th from 10:30 AM to 2:00 PM. This is an opportunity for members of the MBL community to share their crafting skills and for staff to get an early start on the holiday shopping season. Last’s year’s event was done on short notice to great success. This year we plan an expanded event and look forward to great fun. Watch for more informationand if you would like to be one of the participantscontact Human Resources for an application.
If you would like to join the Activities Committee, please contact the Human Resources office, x7422. There are only a few activities throughout the year, but many hands make light work.
Name That MBL Employee
Which of the three people in this photograph works at the MBL? If you answered Bill Clinton or Carly Simon, you’d be incorrect. In fact, the MBL employee pictured here (far right) is none other than Rob Loyot, MBL Assistant Director of Information Technology. This photo of Rob with President Bill Clinton and singer Carly Simon was taken 10 years ago when Rob and his former band, Entrain, were playing a party at the then President’s Martha’s Vineyard vacation home. Clinton joined the band on stage for an impromptu jam session and even borrowed one of Rob’s saxophones! “The President did a pretty good job,” recalls Rob. “He’s very knowledgeable about music and saxophones.”
Since then, Rob has met the President two more times. In August, he and other original members of Entrain were asked to perform at Clinton’s 60th birthday party hosted by actors Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen and attended by a celebrity who’s who including Meg Ryan, Larry David, and Vernon Jordan. The President took the stage once again and, courtesy of Rob’s saxophone, belted out a few tunes with the band.

WHSTEP:
Volunteers Needed for Online Registry
The Woods Hole Science and Technology Education Partnership (WHSTEP) is looking for scientists, technicians, and graduate students who have knowledge and enthusiasm to offer a local educator or student and want to become a part of the Registry of Science Outreach Volunteers (ROV).
The ROV, operated by WHSTEP, is a web-based database that facilitates connections between local teachers (and students) and community members who have scientific knowledge they want to share. It serves the communities of Falmouth, Bourne, and Mashpee.
A variety of opportunities are available including providing one-on-one mentoring to a student or a teacher, making an in-class presentation, or providing a teacher with data for a science or applied math exercise.
Learn more about the ROV at: http://www.whoi.edu/ccod/rov.html
