Whale Nets Thousands for Aquarium

If you’ve been wondering what ever happened to the six-foot right whale model that was on exhibit in Waterfront Park all summer, don’t worry, it hasn’t been stolen. The whale has just moved a few blocks down the street to the Woods Hole Science Aquarium, its new, permanent home.

The whale, which was sponsored by the MBL, the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, and the NOAA/Woods Hole Science Aquarium, was auctioned off at the September 23rd “All’s Well that Ends Whale” auction and gala at the Four Points by Sheraton Hyannis Resort. Forty-eight whale sculptures were offered at the event, which raised more than $100,000 for local charities.

The Woods Hole whale went for a very respectable $6,250—the second highest bid of the night—to none other than a consortium of friends of the Aquarium who pooled their donations. It is currently in the Aquarium lobby until a permanent location is decided upon. Proceeds from the auction will benefit the Woods Hole Science Aquarium, which is jointly operated by the MBL and the National Marine Fisheries Service.
