Appendix 2 - Local Pectinaria Collection Sites

Stations (color) where Pectinaria gouldii were collected off of Wild Harbor, West Falmouth on Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts. (Reproduced from Sanders et al., 1980).

Another area is the exposed sand flats at the mouth of Barnstable Harbor across from Sandy Neck light, the location of which is shown in the clickable map (Fig. 14).

At the sand flat (Fig. 15), wait for the exposed intertidal zone at low tide (Fig. 16). Burrows can be identified from the sand casts; look for a dark slash about 1/2 to 3/4 inch long and 3/4 inch wide. Dig a few inches below the surface. When digging, great care should be taken to avoid crushing the sand test and puncturing the thin body wall. Animals disappear from shallow areas in late August and early September.
